Landfill Expansion Hearing

ELMIRA - [WENY]     The Chemung County Legislature held a public hearing on Thursday night about the possible increase in the amount of trash that can go to the county landfill, which would double the capacity.
Landfill operator Casella Waste Systems wants to bring the capacity to 417,000 tons from the current volume of 180,000 tons.
Some residents at the hearing spoke out against the increase, saying it could bring ground water contamination, and dangerous gases.
Casella plans on installing new protective lining systems to protect against leakage, but opponents at the hearing said those will eventually fail.
The proposal also needs to be approved by the Department of Environmental Conservation, which could take several months.
If you were unable to make it to the hearing, you can still write in comments to Chemung County regarding the proposal, the deadline was extended until March 4th.
