Latta Brook Road Bridge Re-Opens
August 21, 2013
HORSEHEADS -- (WENY) Some good news for people who live near the Latta Brook Road Bridge in Horseheads. The bridge is scheduled to re-open this Friday, which is much earlier than anticipated.
The bridge, which went under construction in July for work on the deck, connects many neighborhoods with Horseheads and Elmira.
So long road closure signs and lengthy detours, the new Latta Brook Road Bridge is ready for traffic. Construction crews are putting on the finishing touches, preparing for opening day, which is coming much sooner than they thought.
Brian Kelly, NYSDOT Acting Regional Director, said, "46 days is really, truly a pretty outstanding time line I don't know that we've ever seen one quite this tight before." "For people here in the Orchid Knoll neighborhood Latta Brook Road Bridge is their life line to the city. And when we told them that their bridge would be opening again, they were very happy to say the least."
David Kane of Orchird Knoll said, "they did it fast they did a nice job it looks great I don't think anybody can complain about that."
Tanya Malone said it's been a very costly summer for her. Spending over 600 dollars in gas going around the bridge. "Very long, very long and very expensive as far as gas. It's doubled or tripled for most people."
But she's happy to see it open once again, and even earlier than they hoped. "I called everybody and said it was going to open Friday and everybody was really happy it was done two weeks early. It will be an end to our misery."
Neighbors biggest concern from the closure was emergency response time. Luckily there weren't any serious incidents.
John Joensen of Orchird Knoll said, "I think the story has a happy ending and we can't wait to start driving over the bridge again."
The DOT said they're scheduled to open the bridge sometime Friday evening.
