Local JC Penney Express Store to Close
WELLSBORO (WENY)- The imminent closing of a Northern Tier business is not sitting well with it's customers.
The owners of the JC Penny Express, Wendy and Rick Joachim, in got notice in March that the company could be shutting them down for good any day. This comes just weeks after JC Penney's stock dropped 4%.
The Joachim's bought the store 2 years ago, but it has been in the area for over 25 years. For customers it's like a mom and pop store with the convenience and technology of a national chain.
"I just feel that it would be very sad if this store and many other stores close," says customer Ida Dziengowski.
With the nearest mall about an hour away, JC Penney Express has filled a need in Wellsboro, but that's going to change in less than a month.
Penney's financial woes led to a re-organization which includes closing over 300 of the Express stores nationwide.
"I'm in a situation where I'm a caretaker for my mother. I do not have the luxury of leaving down for more than 2 to 3 hours max," says customer Barbara Weller.
Rick and Wendy also run a successful restaurant in town, so they'll be okay financially.
However, they've made some special bonds with their customers over the years. They say it's always been about customer service.
"They're like a family to you, they make things so easy to talk to," says customer Virgina Laudenslager.
The owners of Dunhams, another local department store in the area, say they're sad to see the express store go.
We've been told that the tentative closing date is September 30th.
