Local Student Heads to National Spelling Bee

May 27, 2014

PAINTED POST (WENY) -- The 14 year old eighth grader is heading to Maryland this week to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. This is his final time being able to compete.
In 2008, as an 8-year-old second-grader, he set the record as the national bee's youngest competitor. Last year he finished third, when tripped up by the word "ptyalagogue."
The national champion receives a $30,000 cash prize, a $2,500 savings bond and $2,000 worth of reference materials.
The Scripps National Spelling Bee championship round will be televised live on ESPN this Thursday from 8:00PM - 10:00PM.
