Special Report: Mission of Kindness Part 2

CORNING, NY (WENY) -- Christie Speciale saw a need in Corning, and knew she was the one who could fill that void. A long-time animal rescuer, she launched her own non-profit rescue organization, Tanner's P.A.W.S, last year, after the death of her dog Tanner. She's now currently in the process of building a shelter - the first one in this part of Steuben County.
"We started as a rescue, and the difference between a shelter and a rescue is exactly that. A shelter is a place to house animals, a rescue utilizes foster homes, and we do a little bit of both," Christie explained.

A long process, that wouldn't be possible without the help and support of volunteers - many of whom spend their free time to help with the labor. Christie and other Tanners P.A.W.S. board members have also chipped in from their own personal savings, because it's a cause they believe in wholeheartedly.
"We do not get anything (financially) from doing this, besides the reward of being able to save animals.," Christie said.
Tanners P.A.W.S. also teaches people about animal welfare, especially focusing on reaching out to kids; and it shows. One Saturday morning, the shelter gets a special gift; Landon Fleet-Sharman of Corning stops by to donate a load of pet supplies, all things he asked for instead of presents for his ninth birthday. He said he chose to make the donation, because he'd rather give than receive, and knows his gift will go to help other dogs.
It's just part of Tanner's P.A.W.S. mission to educate, and pay it forward.
"We are big on promoting companion animal care, and our future lies with our kids, and I really want my kids to see exactly what we're doing, and hoping that they will then continue it on," said Christie, whose two sons have grown up watching their mother rescue dogs.

On a sunny Saturday in February at the shelter, some kids are rolling up their sleeves and getting dirty, donating their time, and creating a calm environment for lost, abandoned and neglected pets. The shelter will eventually hold up to 12 dogs, most brought in through dog control contracts with the city of Corning and other municipalities.
"We are still promoting our foster homes, and that is the first place want our dogs to go, is into foster care," Christie said.
Foster families are the ideal place for the dogs to live - in a home environment, where they can show their t true personalities. Tanners P.A.W.S. relies on their fosters to help find loving homes for the pets, and keep the shelter from filling up. Each potential foster family goes through an approval process, including a home visit.
As long as there are dogs in need, Tanners P.A.W.S. will be there to rescue them. Christie advocates adopting a dog over purchasing a dog from a pet store or breeder, which can add to the number of dogs that end up in a shelter. Tanner's P.A.W.S. has taken in many pure breed dogs in addition to mixed breeds, and if you're looking for a specific dog, there are many breed-specific rescues you can find easily with an internet search.
