MLK Day in the Twin Tiers
January 20, 2014
TWIN TIERS (WENY) -- In recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Food Bank of the Southern Tier is hosting more than 100 volunteers for a National Day of Service and MLK DAY. Volunteers will sort and repackage bulk food for distribution to neighbors in need. Today is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service, a "day on, not a day off". It's to honor Dr. King's legacy and is an opportunity for Americans to renew their own personal vows of citizenship through service to others. The Food Bank MLK event starts at 10:00AM at the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, 388 Upper Oakwood Avenue, Elmira.
The Economic Opportunity Program of Chemung and Schuyler Counties as well as community volunteers will serve and/or deliver a free turkey dinner to the needy, homeless, elderly, persons with disabilities and homebound. It's for the 16th Annual 'Together We Dine' free community dinner in observance of the 'A Day On! Not a Day Off!' Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service event. It starts at noon and goes until 2:00PM at the Ernie Davis Community Center at 350 E. Fifth Street in Elmira.
Ithaca College has some events scheduled for MLK day, including a talk from a human rights award winner. This year's campus wide celebration is themed 'A Single Garment of Destiny' from a phrase use frequently by King. All events are free and open to the public. At 4PM in Phillips Hall, Librada Paz, a leader in New York's farmworker rights movement will host her talk. Other events include panel discussions, workshops and a concert. More details can be found at www.ithaca.edu/mlkday
Those looking to attend some of the MLK events throughout Tompkins County today can still use TCAT to get around. TCAT is operating on a normal schedule on Martin Luther King Day. TCAT officials say they hope it helps locals attend various celebrations throughout the area.
