Online Petition: Keep Monterey Open
ELMIRA (WENY)--- Monterey Shock is on it's way to closing permanently, but local leaders and former inmates aren't giving up hope just yet.
Now, State Senator Tom O'Mara, Assemblyman Phil Palmesano and Assemblyman Chris friend are encouraging area residents to sign an online petition. The online petition is called, "Keep Monterey Open."
Local residents are also invited to a pubic rally on Monday, September 9th. The leaders will be at the Watkins Glen Community center at 1 PM.
These local leaders say the drill style facility provides inmates with the discipline to lead more productive lives once they get out. As we reported Tuesday, Corning City council voted to send resolution letters to all state representatives asking that the facility stay open. However, the Department of Corrections says the crime rate in New York has dropped 15% over the past 10 years and question the need for programs like this.
