New Dairy Farm Initiative

HORSEHEADS -- (WENY) Governor Cuomo announced a new plan to help boost production at dairy farms. The million dollar plan is called the Dairy Acceleration Program and it's designed to help farmers streamline their business and environmental plans to boost their bottom lines.
The Dairy Acceleration Plan pairs the Department of Agriculture and Environmental Conservation. By doing so, farmers will be able to write new or update existing business and nutrition management plans. For those who are interested, the plan would help with expansion.
Dairy farmer Gary Ettenberger thinks it's a good idea. He says, "Well any plans to help the dairy farmer, I'm all for it. If it can help out even a little bit, promote dairy farming in any way."
Farmers in the area can turn to the Cornell Cooperative extension or Pro Dairy network for support.
Payments from the state to work on these plans range from $4,000 to $6,000.
Given the state of the economy, State Agricultural Commissioner Darrel Aubertine says it's a step in the right direction.
"There are opportunities for those farms that are willing to expand that have the opportunity to expand," says the Commissioner. "No business goes out there and plans to fail many times; they just fail to plan and this helps them to plan."
Preference will be given to farmers with fewer than 300 cows. To apply for the Dairy Acceleration Program visit: http://ansci.cornell.edu/prodairy/dairy_acceleration/.
