NYS DEC Proposal
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is proposing new regulations to help stop the spread of invasive water species. The proposal would require boaters to remove all visible plants and animals from boats, trailers, and other boating equipment before launching or leaving a D-E-C controlled launch or waterway access point.
The DEC currently advises that boats and trailers must be completely drained, including wells and bilge tanks, and then dried after leaving a waterway. The new rules are in an effort to stop invasive species like hydrilla from destroying New York's waterways.
Jim Pfiffer the Executive Director of Friends of the Chemung River said, "It's always a good idea to clean your boat, not only to stop the spread of invasive species, but also for good boat maintenance. A chance to go around and inspect the boat to look for any damage or anything that is going to cause you any safety issues."
