ELMIRA (WENY) -- Right now growing hemp in New York is illegal, but a bill from Senator Tom O'Mara is looking to change that.
A part of the recently passed Farm Bill legalizes the growth of hemp for research purposes. State Senator Tom O'Mara has introduced a bipartisan bill in New York that would allow farmers in the state to legally grow hemp.
The plant can be used for textiles, paper, biofuels, and even food. If the bill passes, New York would become the eleventh state in the nation to set the framework for growing hemp.
