One Arrest in Operation Halloween
October 31, 2013
CHEMUNG COUNTY -- (WENY) While kids are knocking on doors trick or treating. New York State Parole Officers are going around knocking on a few doors of their own, making sure to keep those trick-or-treaters safe.
"This is for community protection. This is parole officers throughout the state of New York and all the counties that we service going out and ensuring that our sex offenders are not engaging in any Halloween activities," said James Pirozzolo, NY State Parole Officer.
The state has been doing this since 2006, calling it Operation Halloween. Parole officers go around and check on up sex offenders to make sure they're following special Halloween conditions.
"They are not engaging with children, they are not handing out trick or treats or dressing up in costumes," Pirozzolo added.
WENY got to go along for one of those home visits. We headed over to Church Street in Elmira. We checked in on two of the six parolee's inside. The first, a level three sex offender, for raping an underage girl. The other, for molesting his own child when she was just 11 months old.
Officers checking through everything, drawers, closets, boxes, under the bed. Searching for anything that may violate their parole. They wrapped up this visit, without any problems. Then it was on to the next home. They'll do face to face visits with 25 sex offenders throughout the night.
For parents trick or treating with their kids just down the road they couldn't be more grateful.
"Makes me feel a lot safter especially with having my three daughts and my nephew," said Amy Myers of Elmira. "We thank them for everything that they do."
And these officers will keep up with the check-in's not only on Halloween but all year long. And parole officers in Chemung County did make one arrest last night, for possessing pornographic material.
