Elmira (WENY) - Sometimes something as small a painting, can mean so much. Here in the Southern Tier, a group of young artists came together to collaborate on a piece of art that's looking to fetch some big bucks come February, and it's all for a great cause. The to the Neighborhood Network Center wanted to make a difference in someone's life. They were painting a picture of a tree but what it represents means so much more. Kids like Josue, Amellia, and Avella will do anything for a friend, especially one who has cancer.
“Because shes my friend and I want to help her over cancer,” says Amellia.
Avella said, “because I've never helped cancer before and its new for me.”
The painting of a tree is for a girl named Kristen Davis. She's an 11 year old from Elmira and she has ovarian cancer. The community is planning to come together to help Kristen as much as they can. LaShaun Scarboroguh is the director of the Neighborhood network Center in Elmira.
“Once I found out that she had cancer it was upsetting because they played with her and I just feel like it could have been my daughters, My daughter is a little bit younger than Kristen but it very well could have been one of mine,” says LaShaun.
She felt her daughter and others who wanted to help could paint a picture that could be more than just a special token. The artwork will be auctioned off at the up coming quarter auction. LaShaun knows how hard life can be for Kristen and her family.
“It's going to be a point in their life where they aren't able to be a child versus a non sick child their whole pattern or schedule gets all mixed up, instead of playing with her friends this weekend she has to go get chemotherapy.”
Although the painting isn't a work by Picasso, its worth so much because its made with love. All the proceeds raised from the auction of the painting will go directly to Kristen and her family.
The quarter auction is February 12th at Dottie's restaurant in Elmira.
