Police Inv. Uncle Jack’s Robbery
Written By: Tanja Rekhi
WEST ELMIRA (WENY) -- This is the second time Uncle Jacks' on West water Street has been hit in about a month. There was an overnight break-in there in September.
This time, things were different. A suspect ran in while the store was open, held the clerk up at gunpoint, and took all the money in the register.
Employees Kaylie Wardwell and Sheila Benjamin are shocked.
"It just makes you feel very uncomfortable that something like this happened and when they don't get caught right away it's just scary," says Kaylie Wardwell.
"And working in West Elmira, you would assume that nothing can happen up here; it's not that type of neighborhood," says Sheila Benjamin.
Uncle Jack's Maple Avenue shop on the South Side was also hit last month. That suspect was caught after allegedly robbing a convenience store in Rochester.
When asked if he thinks these robberies are tied, Sheriff Moss said he has no information to lead him to believe that. He urges business to make sure their cameras are functioning. And if they do get robbed, to give the robber the money.
"It's not worth anyone's life, obviously," said Sheriff Moss. "If we can get a description, that's great. And get a direction they leave if there's a vehicle involved."
He also said to immediately call 911.
The Sheriff is asking anyone who saw anything suspicious to call the Criminal Investigation Division at (607) 737-2933.
