Rail Work Contract Approved
Corning-Wellsboro Railroad Gets $1.8M Grant
CORNING, NY (WENY)---Come this fall, there will be some work on a local railroad. The Wellsboro and Corning Railroad company will restore several mile of rail track from Corning to the Pennsylvania state line--all made possible by a state grant.
The Pennsylvania-based company operates about 35 miles of track and this new grant will help repair about a third of the company's track. It's all a part of a $785million grant awarded through the Southern Tier Regional Economic Development Council..
The railroad company will repair 11 miles of track which run through Steuben County.
Company officials say the project allows the railroad to continue to provide efficent and environmentally friendly service to customers in the Southern Tier. The Southeastern Pennsylvania based company primarily transports industrial products, like sand and water, to and from Northern Tier gas drilling sites.
Thanks to Marcellus shale development, the company expects significant growth and to expand its freight and non-freight services.
