SAYRE---(WENY) While many were out celebrating and bringing in the new year, EMTs at Greater Valley EMS in Sayre are hard at work, offering free rides with their Safe Ride Home Program.
They volunteer to take people to and from their holiday gatherings to keep drunk drivers off the road.
EMT, Amanda Knapp has been doing it for three years now. She says, "We go to Tioga Downs, Chemung Area, all the down to Ulster. We run mainly the bar area at night. They call, we run."
The program has been going on since 1991and has kept the area DWI accident free on New Year's Eve.
For 22 years, Greater Valley EMS has been serving the community, but they can't do it alone. They get food donations from local restaurants to keep them going, and vehicles for pick-ups.
Safe Ride Home Coordinator, Fran Webb says, "Williams Autogroup has donated five vehicles for us to use free of charge."
It's all to ensure everyone stays safe. The EMTs also have a plan in place to keep themselves safe as well. Each driver goes out with another rider to quelch any issues with intoxicated drivers in the back.
If you need a free ride tonight after the ball drops, call 570-888-6000.
