Schuyler Co. Couple Heads to Prison for Theft
SCHUYLER COUNTY (WENY) -- A former fire chief and his wife are headed to prison for stealing more than $100,000 from the Monterey Volunteer Fire Department.
Larry States of Montour Falls was sentenced to 1 1/3 - 4 years in state prison. His wife Kimberly of Beaver Dams received one year. Both were ordered to make restitution in the amount of $115,000.
During the investigation, New York State Police and the NYS Comptroller's Office discovered the couple had taken thousands over a period of five years.
"It is always disturbing when a public officials abuses his or her position for personal benefit, but it is particularly egregious when the fraud is committed by a member of Law Enforcement," says state comptroller, Thomas DiNapoli.
Larry is the former chief of the Monterrey Volunteer Fire Department and a former Schuyler County sargeant.
