Schuyler Co. SAFE Act Discussion
March 19, 2013
Schuyler County (WENY) - Across the New York Local Sheriffs are taking time to explain New York's S.A.F.E Act to local gun owners. Tuesday Schuyler County Sheriff Bill Yessman spoke to more than a hundred residents about the details.

It's the same story just a different county, Schuyler County gun owners coming out to learn as much as they can about the SAFE act.

“I think it really strengthened my belief that people of the state of new york the law abiding gun owners are against this legislation,” says Sheriff Yessman.

The argument from most gun owners is the law only punishes law abiding citizens...and wont have an affect on the criminals, but another issue has come to the forefront of the SAFE Act debate – geography.

“There are very few people in the NYC area that have ever been upstate, says gun owner Mark Osatchuck. “They don't know what its like up here its two completely different cultures. That's the problem with this bill that shoved through so fast.”

A clear division between downstate and Upstate counties is outlined in a map showing almost all of New York's county Legislatures passing legislation showing they are opposed to the SAFE Act

“Down state controls upstate it's a known fact, its a known fact if you go up to Albany that down state has the majority,” says Yessman.

The law is also having an impact on law enforcement, Sheriff Yessman says that his department tried to order ammunition, and the distributor told him it could take up to a year to fill the order.
