Self Defense for a Cause
ELMIRA - [WENY]
American Family Karate in Elmira had its first annual "Care For Our Community" event Monday night. Self Defense for a Good Cause was the theme.
Women were able to bring in coats and canned food for a free 1 hour self-defense lesson. The lessons aim to raise awareness and hopefully give the women a way to fight back against a would be attacker. Items collected tonight will be donated to Able 2.
Shawnie Brown, the Head Instructor at American Family Karate said, "This is going to be an annual event, we'll choose different community organizations, I'm trying to instill to our kids that this is our community, we need to support it."
The event also included a kick-a-thon. American Family Karate students kicked as much as possible in 2 minutes to help raise money for an area girl with mounting medical expenses named Grier. You can find out more about Grier at: http://www.facebook.com/thisgrierisonfire
A funding campaign is also being held to help pay for an inpatient program to help teach Grier to eat her food by mouth. Grier is currently fed via a Gastrostomy Tube (G-Tube), which delivers nutrition directly to the stomach through a tube. The funding campaign can be found here: http://www.gofundme.com/4t61qo
