Steuben County Road Damage

Steuben County Road Damage
Bath (WENY) -- Between 4:30 and 5 p.m. Monday, a farm tractor was driving down County Route 10 in Bath, and the driver unknowingly dropped down a disc harrow, and dragged it for three miles, digging up the road surface.

The state trooper eventually stopped the driver, but an official police report has not been filed yet with the driver's information.

The county temporarily paved the roads, but the Commissioner of Public Works, Vince Spagnoletti, estimates the final repair bill will come in anywhere from $100,000 to $300,000.

"The way it works in the county, say if a car smashes into a guardrail, the repair of that guardrail, the cost is charged to the insurance company of that driver and car," said Spagnoletti. "And we're looking at this the same thing."

Once the police report is filed, the commissioner will meet with county attorneys to figure out how to collect the money to fix the road.
