Federal Funding Could Save Stream Gauges

WASHINGTON, DC (WENY) --  Federal funding in Washington will continue to fund stream gauges that help provide critical flood warnings here in New York.
Congress is set to approve the omnibus appropriations bill this week. That includes $33.7 million dollars to expand the national stream gauge network.
The U.S. Geological Survey gathers streamflow information from the gauges, which help provide valuable real-time data and is used in forecasting and to predict flooding.
During Tropical Storm Lee in 2011, gauges in the Susquehanna River Basin helped measure rainfall and provide important data for emergency responders and residents.
