Suspect In Armed Bank Robbery Still At Large
WEST ELMIRA---(WENY) The West Elmira Police Department along with the Chemung County Sheriff's Office is still searching for the suspect who remains at large.
Police say a man went into the Elmira Savings Bank on the corner of Wall and West Church Streets around 5:00 Friday afternoon, pulled out a gun, demanded money, and then left with an undisclosed amount of money.
The suspect is described as a thin man, about 5'08" tall. At the time, He was wearing a dark colored hoodie sweatshirt, blue jeans and a black knit hat. He was last seen running down W. First Street. This marks the third bank robbery in Chemung county in just over two months.
In the wake of the incident, Undersheriff Bill Schrom wants to remind people to always be aware of their surroundings. He said, "Bank robberies aren't the norm. There have been a few over the last few months, so we just ask the public to be diligent anytime you visit an establishment like that. Be aware of you're surroundings, just be cognizant of what's going on around you, but no reason not to go and do your normal course of business."
