BUFFALO, N.Y. (WENY) -- A few area businesses are now finalists in a global competition.
Mezmeriz, Inc. and Lionano Inc. in Ithaca and InfraSonic Monitoring in Vestal, are among the 113 semifinalists selected for the 43North Global business idea competition. It's all a part of Governor Cuomo's Buffalo Billion initiative, to bring new businesses to Western New York.
Cuomo calls 43North the world's largest competition of its kind. Nearly 7,000-business ideas have been submitted. The semifinalists had been announced from a pool of over 2,000.
The 113 candidates chosen to advance to the semifinal round submit business ideas rooted from as far away as India and Switzerland, and California and Washington, and represent nearly every economic sector, including healthcare and biotechnology, information technology, software, mobile technology, green and clean technology, life sciences, advanced manufacturing, media and entertainment, sports and fitness, agri-business, business services, education, e-commerce and logistics.
The top award is $1 million dollars. Winners also receive free incubator space for a year and guidance from mentors related to their field. The semifinalists will present their plans via webinar in September.
