Twin Tiers Regional Spelling Bee
March 7, 2013
Campbell (WENY) - Forty students from twenty schools in the Twin Tiers competed to be the ultimate speller. But one student came to reclaim his title.
"We have one young boy whose been to the nationals twice already, that's Sriram Hathwar, so I guess many people have been thinking he's the favorite but who knows," said Master of Ceremonies Richard Pope.
And those people guessed right, Sriram Hathwar, a 7th grader at the Alternative School for Math and Science won the 11th Annual Regional Spelling Bee tonight.
Two students from each competing school took to the stage at Campbell-Savona High school. It was a lot of practice and a lot of luck but Sriram came out on top. No stranger to the bee, Sriram made history in 2008 as nation's youngest competitor. Sriram won tonight's bee with the word "mobiliary."
And it was a family affair - his younger brother Jairam Hathwar, a 4th grader at Chemung Valley Montessori, came in second place, with the word "jicama." The family will be making a trip down to DC in late may to see if Sriram can win the national title.
