Coming Together for the Wiehe Family
Written By: Nick Quattrini
Students with the Skills USA chapter at the G-S-T BOCES Bush Campus collected donations for a family who lost everything in a fire. On Wednesday afternoon, The Wiehe family was presented with a $1,000 check to help them get back on their feet. The family of five lost all of their belongings, and their home was completely destroyed in last month's fire on Duncan Drive in Horseheads. The fire also claimed the lives of their three dogs, and a cat.
Christopher Wiehe said, "It's just been amazing. The community support, and people I don't know and I have never come in contact with coming out to help us and support us."
Alex Wheeler, a SkillsUSA member said, "We wanted to help out this family, the Wiehe Family. We had found out about their house burning, and we wanted to help them out."
Megan Greatsinger, also a SkillsUSA member said, "Every year we really try to find a family or a charity in need, but especially we wanted to after seeing how they lost everything."
A funding campaign on indiegogo.com raised more than $3,600 for the Wiehe family, exceeding the initial $3,000 goal.
