ELMIRA (WENY)-- A mother and her 12-year-old son have been battling burn injuries at Strong Memorial Hospital after a fire ravaged their home on West Second Street almost two weeks ago.
Sadly, the hospital tells us, Daniel Mattison, Jr. has passed away.
Neighbors say he lived with his 44-year-old mother, Lisa Brown, who is still in guarded condition at the hospital.
Lisa's cousin and his children lived just below them and are staying with other family members.
Neighbors were sad to hear the news and say Brown is a good mom, and her only son will be sorely missed.
"I've seen him get off the bus. She would wait for him all the time. [the night of the fire] He was screaming and yelling. I guess she just panicked. I mean her little boy was crying and everything because he was burnt his face was burnt and his hand was burnt," says neighbor Helen Drake.
The fire department ruled the blaze accidental, but is still investigating along with Elmira Police.
Brown's relatives, who lived downstairs, are being helped by the American Red Cross and no word yet on a memorial for young Daniel Mattison, Jr.
