Fruit-Killing Fly Found in Chemung County

A spotted fruit fly could be a game changer for some fruit growers in Chemung County.
ELMIRA (WENY)---A spotted fruit fly could be a game changer for some fruit growers in Chemung County.
This week, the Spotted Wing Drosophila was found in the county. The fly resembles a fruit fly, with males having 2 black dots on their wing tips and females resembling normal fruit flies.
But they're different because they lay eggs in ripening fruit and the developing maggots make the fruit inedible.
The fly seriously affects raspberry, blackberry and strawberry growers.
