EH Consolidation Talks Get Serious

ELMIRA HEIGHTS -- [WENY] The Elmira Heights Central School board is set to vote to apply for a grant to look into the feasibility of merging, and what it means to taxpayers.
This past weekend, hundreds of parents, teachers and students rallied at Edison High School in Elmira Heights to urge lawmakers to help them avoid consolidation.
But, plans to find out what it will take for Elmira Heights and Horseheads to merge are moving forward .
The two School districts will likely apply for a state grant to hire a consultant to invstigate what it takes to merge and what would come out of it.
The Elmira Heights School board will be deciding whether to apply for the 50 thousand dollar grant at tonight's meeting.
The Heights Superintendent, Mary Beth Fiore, says the ultimate decision lies with the community.
"You've gotta engage the community, you have to have community strategic teams that look at all of these things and they are a very intricate part of this whole process so this is just the beginning to see if we can get the money to take a look at things," said Fiore.
The board won't know if the state approves the application for a couple months.
