Southside High School Presidential Debate
Southside High Holds Mock Presidential Debate
Elmira (WENY)--An Elmira school held a last minute Presidential debate today.
Well, Governor Romney and President Obama weren't really and Southside High. Instead, Southside Seniors did a mock debate where students played the roles of the Presidential candidates. Students ran the entire production themselves to show their school just how important being involved in the election process really is.
Jenni Williams who acted as Governor Romeny says "everybody should be a part of it, everyone should know what's going on. It affects you whether it's in a big way or a little way it affects you somehow".
The moderator, Alexis Field, says "Just because we're 17 and not old enough to vote, they are going to be affecting us in 4 years when we go to school, when we go to college."
The students also voted for President during their lunch periods. President Barack Obama won with 133 votes, to Mitt Romney's 66.
Some interesting factsfrom the 2008 election, voters between ages 18 and 29 made up 18 percent of all voters. The 18 to 29 age group was the only one with significant increase in voter turnout.
