Flu Cases Up in NYS

Flu cases are up statewide but local numbers are down.

The New York State Department of Health has seen a 35 percent increase in cases over this time in 2013.

Chemung County has had 23 confirmed cases since September and Steuben County health officials have had more than 50.

Local health officials say numbers are way down compared to last year, even though the 2012-13 flu season started earlier.

The flu has also been widespread in Tompkins County but leaders say they're not keeping track of specific numbers.

"We do suggest and urge people who haven't had a flu shot to do that," says Theresa Lyczko, a public information officer for the Tompkins Co. Health Dept. "It still can protect them through the remainder of flu season which sometimes can last through April or May."

Most local departments have been seeing Influenza Type A.
