Food Allergies in Schools
For some kids everyday is a battle against allergies.
HORSEHEADS N.Y--(WENY-TV)-- It is back to school time, and many children heading back to school will either have, or be in class with someone who has a food allergy. In fact researchers say 1 in 13 children as a food allergy, and that is roughly two students per classroom. At the Genier household both Joe and Lucia have severe allergies, older sister Sophia does not, but is always aware of her siblings. Joe's allergies have been so severe he has required an aid to be with him at all times during school this past year.
At Asthma and Allergy Associates Dr. Julie McNairn says that in order to keep kids with allergies safe people should do the following.
All children wash hands frequently
Wipe down desk
Make a plan with doctors and teachers (if student has allergy)
Check labels of food (if child is in class with allergic student)
Never allow food trading.
The Genier's also say that snacksafely.com provides information on how to know if food is safe to bring to school.
