Horseheads and Elmira Heights School District talk of possible merger.
HORSEHEADS (WENY) -- Talks of school mergers have been on the rise in the area and the Horseheads and Elmira Heights school district might be next to jump on the bandwagon.
Tonight a joint board meeting was held at Horseheads High School. The Western New York Educational Service Council, an organization that works on school mergers, was there to explain what the school boards should expect, if a merger occurs.
Some board members were concerned about the effect on school programs, and how taxes will impact the schools. Another main topic of discussion was establishing a Community Advisory Committee by the end of August. The committee is to be 16 community members from each district.
"The committee is the eyes and the ears of the community. So we'll gather a tremendous amount of data and information and present it to them. They'll help guide this process by being, representing different constituent groups. There will be teacher representatives, support staff representatives, administrative representatives, parents, students, will all have a opportunity to review all the data and see if a merger makes sense," says Tom Coseo from WNYESC.
The next meeting will be held in mid September.
