Suspect Caught in Ithaca Police Shooting

Suspect In Custody

UPDATE (6:45PM) ITHACA, NY (WENY)---Police have arrested Jamel Booker in connection with the police shooting in Ithaca.

Police say Ithaca police officer Anthony Augustin was following Booker in his patrol car because Booker was behind the wheel of stolen car. Booker then made an abrupt turn, got out of a car and ran off into the woods.

The officer then chased him. Once through the woods, Booker fired a single shot, hitting Augustin in the upper chest area. The officer was wearing his bullet proof vest at the time. Augustin just got out of his second surgery and is recovering.

As for Booker, he has a long rap sheet. Earlier this year, the Ithaca man was on the run for more than nine months accused of shooting an Elmira man three times back in April 2011. And in October 2008, Booker---who was 18 at the time--was arrested on felony drugs and weapons charges.
