MAUSOLEUM IN ELMIRA TO BE FIXED
The city will pay to fix the building.
ELMIRA N.Y--(WENY-TV)-- The Elmira City Council accepted a bid tonight from Keuka Construction to begin rehab work at the mausoleum in the Woodlawn cemetery. The mausoleum is in severe disrepair, and is home to over two 270 bodies. Over the years some descendants have even gone as far as removing there family members from the decaying building. The city is not the original owner of the building although they do own the cemetery. Some have expressed anger that the city is liable for the building and not the company who built the building in the 1920's and later went bankrupt. WENY asked both Councilmen Duffy who proposed the plan and Mayor Sue Skidmore about that issue at the meeting tonight.
Councilmen Duffy says that the other option was tearing the building down and that would have cost three to four times more once the bodies were relocated.
Mayor Skidmore said that since the owner defaulted and the building was on city property it became the cities responsibility.
