Preventing Bursting Pipes
ITHACA (WENY) -- Whenever temperatures dip this low, pipes in your home that were just thawed out could freeze up again.
The Ithaca Fire Department says trying to thaw them out yourself is more dangerous than you may think. They've responded to a few fires caused by people trying to thaw their pipes incorrectly.
The department recommends using a hairdryer to thaw those frozen pipes. They say never to use an open flame or leave thawing pipes unattended.
"Running water will not freeze, so if you have pipes that are questionable Keep your water running a little bit. You don't have to keep it running full blast or anything," said Lt. Tom Deis, Ithaca Fire Department.
If in doubt, call a plumber or heating contractor to safely thaw the line.
