Rathbone Election Investigation

STEUBEN COUNTY, NY (WENY) -- An investigation by the Chemung County district attorney looked into questionable election practices in Steuben County for the 2011 November election.
District Attorney Weeden Wetmore was appointed to look into absentee ballot irregularities in the town of Rathbone. Wetmore says a high number of absentee ballots sparked concerns by election commissioners, and that some names of candidates on the ballots appeared to have the same handwriting. The investigation revealed a number of voters who cast their ballot via absentee, even though they were not out of Steuben County on election day. Many said they were approached about voting absentee, by some of the candidates running for office. The investigation looked into the conduct of candidates Dan Farrand, Lanny Newell, Duane Miles, and Steven Kirk.
Wetmore concluded the candidates and absentee voters didn't follow proper procedure regarding the ballots, no crimes were committed.
