Red Cross Readiness 10-29-12

A flashlight, water, blankets, a battery powered radio, copies of personal documents, a fully charged cell phone... All things you'll need to make sure you're prepared for Sandy's arrival.

You may also need to break out the coolers and fill them with ice to keep food from spoiling.

Brian McConnell, Executive Director of the American Red Cross for the Greater Steuben Chapter says, "

You don't want to leave food out above 40 degrees farenheit for more than two hours, and if you have any conerns, we really ask you to throw it away. Start with frozen foods first as you eat your way thorugh the power outage, and then you can look at other non-perishable items you may have on your shelves."

Anybody taking any medications need to have them filled for up to seven days if you are running out.

Also, If you're on oxygen you'll want to contact your power company before the power goes out to let them know of your needs and also your oxygen provider to find out what back up options may be available.

McConnell says to, "Contact your local Emergency Manager and let them know you're oxygen dependent. And, if the power goes out, what plans are in place for those customers."

Shelters and emergency personnel are on alert in Chemung, Schuyler, and Steuben counties.

The Red Cross has a 'Safe and Well" website where you can register and update you and your family's status as the storm continues.

There is also a hurricane app that can be downloaded to your smartphone with the latest up dates from NOAA.
