Elmira (WENY) - A Southside project could turn some undeveloped brownfield areas into a neighborhood asset. Neighbors from the Southside of Elmira met tonight to brainstorm ways to use a more than 200-thousand dollar grant to improve their town. Funding for the project is coming from the Brownfield opportunities area Program. The areas for development include former industrial sites that are perceived to be or are contaminated. Jennifer Miller from Elmira's Community Development says initial ideas for the redevelopment include new businesses, street scapes or a park.
“We're here today to look at approximately 400 acre area of the Southside to introduce the public to the project, and get some visions on what they would like to see, ways that these areas can be improved, what assets there are in this area,” says Miller.
Tonight was the first of 3 public brain storming sessions. A plan should be finalized by the end of the year.
