Telephone Scam

ATHENS---(WENY) Pennsylvania State Police in Towanda are investigating a telephone scam after an elderly woman was nearly scammed out of 2-thousand dollars. A telephone scammer told the woman she would recieve $2.5 million dollars and a brand new Lexus if she sent in the money.

When the 82-year-old woman went to buy Green Dot Money Pac Cards from a convenience store in Athens, store clerks became suspicious and called the police who were able to get to the woman before she paid the scammer. Authorities say the calls were coming in from area codes 876 , 347, and 469, and read Bidaxis and Visual Voice on the caller ID.

PA State police want to remind everyone not to give out any personal or banking information over the phone. Anyone with info is asked to Pennsylvania State Police at 570-265-2186.
