Voting Day: School Budgets

ELMIRA (WENY) -- New York state voters have some decisions to make on school budgets when they hit the polls today.
Polls are open in most districts until 8:00 or 9:00 p.m. Check with your local district for polling times and locations.
Voters cast ballots on the budget and school board in Elmira Heights today, at Thomas Edison High School.
Fortunately, the district isn't faced with the same budget issues as last year, with the proposed tax increase well under the state's tax cap. Superintendent Mary Beth Fiore, is hoping for a larger voter turn out than last year.
"Last year, it was disappointing, we missed the super majority by very few votes," said Superintendent Fiore. "Many people after the fact said they assumed the budget would pass, so they didn't bother coming to the polls."
Compared to 2013, this year's proposed budget in Elmira Heights is only $1,400 more. That calculates to a $7 tax increase for a home valued at $100,000.
Despite an ongoing merger study with Horseheads, Fiore says there are no cuts to staff or programs
Meantime in Elmira, voters will find a proposition to buy 12 new buses to replace older, inefficient buses, costing taxpayer 8 cents extra, thanks to a state grant.
