Waverly Pep Rally Called Insensitive
WAVERLY, NY (WENY)---There's trouble brewing in one Southern Tier school district. The Waverly School district is gaining national attention over what some students are calling a racist and insensitive pep rally.
It all started with a CNN Ireport. That's where CNN viewers can upload their own reporting. This ireport was posted by a Waverly High School graduate. He says on Friday, students dressed in blackface and acted out scenes of domestic violence at a school pep rally in front of parents, teachers, students and administrators.
The image posted along with the report is allegedly three Waverly students acting out a skit of Chris Brown beating Rihanna. The white students allegedly painted their faces black.
The story was published Monday morning and has received more than 15,000 views as of Tuesday morning.
People are firing back on both sides of the issue. On Twitter, some people are saying they are ashamed of their high school. Others are saying the skit was harmless.
WENY-TV News is reaching out to the Waverly school district administration and will keep you updated on any developments.
