Waverly Woman Scammed Out of Thousands of Dollars

WAVERLY (WENY)---A Waverly woman is out $21,000 dollars this morning, the victim of a sweepstakes scam.

The 80 year old got a phone call in May, saying she won a sweepstakes and needed to send money to Costa Rica to win a larger grand prize.

A month later, a lawyer called telling her the sweepstakes was a fraud and she needed to send him money so he could get her money back.

Police say the Waverly branch of the Chemung Canal Trust company noticed the transactions.
