Binghamton Firefighter Found Dead

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (AP) - A 57-year-old firefighter has been found dead in a Binghamton firehouse.

Binghamton Assistant Fire Chief Richard Allen says John Janos was found dead early Saturday morning. Allen says Janos was on call the night before and had climbed five flights of stairs to investigate a smoke detector false alarm around 12:30 a.m.

Autopsy results are pending.

Janos was a member of Binghamton's Fire Department since 1988. He had a wife and three children and was nearing retirement.

The department is planning a memorial service.

Calling hours are scheduled for tomorrow at JA McCormick's Funeral Home from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Funeral services will take place Wednesday at St Thomas Aquinas Church at 10:00 a.m.
