Schumer Bus Safety Bill Passes Congress
WASHINGTON, D.C. (WENY)---Senator Chuck Schumer's bill requiring safety ratings for discount bus companies is one step closer to becoming a law.
Congress passed the bill, requiring the Department of Transportation to create new safety ratings for low cost bus companies. It also says that there must be public disclosure of safety grades.
Schumer wants the safety grades to be shown as letter grades, much like the safety rating system for New York City restaurants. He proposed the bill last year in response to several crashes involving the discount bus industry.
The bill now heads to the desk of President Obama.
