Albany, NY (WEMY)- The New York State senate passed a bill today that would make it a crime to leave a child unattended in a car in extreme conditions.
The bill would require children eight or younger to be under the supervision of someone 12 years or older, if conditions present a health or safety risk, like extreme hot or cold weather.
Between 1998 and 2004, more than 200 children died after being left in hot cars.
Parents who knowingly leave their children alone in a car could be charged with a misdemeanor.
The bill now heads to the Assembly.
