NEW YORK---[WENY]---The results are in for New York's standardized tests for elementary students, under the new Common Core standards for Math and English.
At first glance, the results are disappointing. State education leaders warned early on not to expect great results.
Less than a third of the third through eighth graders scored proficient in English and Math.
Last year, before the Common Core Standards went into effect a little more than half tested proficient in English. Two-thirds met or exceeded the math standard.
Elmira City School District Interim Superintendent Hillary Austin, says the lower scores where foreseen.
"We're looking at the data and talking about further steps of implementing the Common Core. It's important to know this is baseline data. This cannot be compared to last years testing information," Hillary Austin.
