Schumer Warns of Exploding Batteries

(WENY)-- New York's senior senator is warning you about exploding cell phone batteries. He says buying counterfeit or poorly made cell-phone batteries can lead to phones overheating and even exploding.

In the last two years, Schumer says there's been at least 60 reported incidents of phone batteries smoking, catching fire, or exploding.  One time, a battery exploded in a Texas man's ear. He also noted a Minnesota eighth grader who was burned when a cell phone exploded in his pocket. Most of the poorly manufactured batteries come from China.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission says you should stick with manufacturer or carrier-recommended batteries. They also say you shouldn't buy  off-brand replacement batteries, like the cheap options available on the street or at discount stores.
