Forest Fires Planned: Finger Lakes
HECTOR, N.Y. (AP) - Prescribed burns aimed at preventing wildfires will be conducted next month at a national forest in the Finger Lakes region.
Officials with the National Forest Service say the burns will likely begin during the first week of November and end by Nov. 15 in Finger Lakes National Forest, which spreads across parts of Seneca and Schuyler counties.
The prescribed fires are planned for 400 to 600 acres of the 16,000-acre national forest between Seneca and Cayuga lakes.
The Forest Service uses the burns as a proactive way to keep the habitat healthy and cut down on the possibility of wildfires. The prescribed fires are typically conducted during the spring and fall.
