Gillibrand in Ash Borer Fight
WASHINGTON, DC (WENY) -- U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is calling for more funding to help fight an invasive beetle that's been spreading across New York State.
The Emerald Ash Borer has now been detected in 15 counties across the state, including Steuben and Tioga in the Southern Tier. Gillibrand says funding is needed to help research, control and eradicate the beetle, which threatens 900 million ash trees.
Right now, there are no known methods of controlling the bug, which burrows in ash trees and cuts off their water supply, slowly killing the tree.
