Gun Control Bill Gets Go-Ahead

NY Guns Laws Signed by Cuomo
ALBANY---(WENY) New York lawmakers have agreed on the first and toughest gun control laws in the nation. Governor Cuomo and legislative leaders have reached a deal to enact the nation's first gun control measure following the Newtown, CT school shooting.

The State Senate passed Como's gun control bill in a 43-18 vote late Monday night. If Cuomo's Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act or NY SAFE passes the Assembly later today, it will further restrict New York's ban on assault weapons and limit the size of magazines to seven bullets, rather than 10. The Bill also includes a Webster provision with a penalty of life without parole for murdering a first responder.

Other elements, pushed by Republicans, would refine a mental health law that allows for civil confinement of people determined to be a threat to others.
