Cornell (WENY) - Doctors are saying a new drug is a major breakthrough for the fight against hepatitis C. It's a common viral infection, with about 3 to 4 million Americans infected. Over the years, the virus can cause damage to the liver, and in some cases lead to liver failure and liver cancer.
Last month, the FDA approved a new medication called Sovaldi. It's expected to increase cure rates among people infected with hepatitis C. Clinical trials show the medication to be 80 to 90 percent effective in curing hepatitis C. As opposed to half with other treatments. Sovaldi should be available in pharmacies in the next couple of months.
